Vertical Nucleus Of Diagonal Band

A reduction in SDHACU sites caused by the lesion was found in regions including the medial septum, vertical nucleus of the diagonal band, thalamus, nucleus basalis magnocellularis, and basolateral amygdala. M1 receptors were increased in the basolateral and central amygdaloid nuclei whereas non-M1 receptors were increased in the basolateral and central amygdaloid nuclei, but were diminished in the medial septum, vertical nucleus of the diagonal band, thalamus, and nucleus basalis magnocellularis.

The medial septal nucleus and vertical nucleus of diagonal band of Broca had no significant change.

ChAT-positive cell bodies were mapped and counted in Ch1 (medial septal nucleus), Ch2 (vertical nucleus of the diagonal band), Ch3 (horizontal nucleus of the diagonal band) and Ch4 (nucleus basalis of Meynert).

On GD17-18, neurons in the anterior olfactory nucleus, olfactory tubercle, horizontal and vertical nucleus of the diagonal band, and medial septal nucleus stained more darkly and were multipolar, whereas immature bipolar neurons appeared to continue their migration into the hippocampus and along major fiber tracts, such as the corpus callosum, external capsule, fornix and anterior commissure.

After unilateral removal of the hippocampus or section of the fimbria there is hypertrophy of the cholinergic neurones of the contralateral medial septal nucleus (+24%) and vertical nucleus of the diagonal band (+18%).

After removal of the hippocampus there is marked loss of cholinergic neurones in the medial septal nucleus and in the vertical nucleus of the diagonal band, and with severe shrinkage of the remaining cells.

Other hypothalamic and preoptic areas including the arcuate-median eminence, vertical nucleus of diagonal band and lateral septal nucleus showed smaller reductions in 5-HT, from 40 to 70% of sham values.
